Open your heart, give a home to a person with a disability
Home sharing is opening your home to a person with diverse abilities. Many of the individuals we support desire independence but are not yet (or perhaps ever) ready to live on their own. Home sharing provides that independent lifestyle while also meeting the personal support needs of the individual placed in your home.
Kindale welcomes Home Share providers throughout the North Okanagan and Shuswap communities. Home share placements can vary and are based on the personal preferences of both the supported individual and the home share provider. The home share provider can be a single person, a couple or a family. The home can be owned or rented by the caregiver. All homes such as detached, semi-detached, apartments and townhouses can be considered for a home share placement. More independent individuals may prefer a basement suite or a coach house.
The success of our Home Share Program depends on the close relationship that develops between the Home Share Family, the Individual and the Home Share Coordinator. Home is where a person feels safe, relaxed and comfortable. The home share coordinator will work closely with all involved to best determine how the needs of the supported individual can be met. Kindale helps to supervise, support and monitor individuals in their home share placements. Additional supports may be available through day programs, community inclusion, recreation opportunities and work readiness. Home Share Coordinators carefully match the needs and preferences of the individual with the skills, experience and opportunities that the home share provider can offer. We recognize that some individuals may become an integral part of your family and others may be more independent. With regular home visits, health and safety planning, goal setting and progress reports, the team will work together to ensure that the home share placement is long-term and successful.

As this is such an important part of our successful program, the approval process is multi-faceted. A comprehensive assessment will be completed prior to approving any home sharing provider. Our Home Share Coordinators will guide you through the application process and help you meet all of Kindale’s requirements.
We will begin with an application process which includes a description of your home and the level of support that you have to offer. Our Home Share Coordinators will work with you to complete the application and the home study. This time provides the opportunity for you to ask as many questions as you have to gain a thorough understanding of what the Home Share program is all about.
Home Share Coordinators spend time getting to know the individual and their preferences. Coordinators then identify home share applicants who could be considered a potential match. The Coordinator facilitates opportunities for the individual to spend time with the potential provider so that they can get to know each other.
The person served makes the final decision of selecting his home share provider. Once a decision has been made, the Home Share Coordinator assists with transition planning with input from the individual and or their support network.
